TITLE
Characterization of Functional Nanomaterials For Emerging Biomedical Applications
Abstract
Functional nanomaterials, especially in suspension form, are highly attractive for emerging
biomedical application. Material-by design has shown to be important to support this development,
especially through the use of self-assembly to enhance functionalities. In order to implement the design, the
material properties have to be presented accurately. On that basis, correlation between material properties
and product performance can be meaningful. From the perspective of product development and quality
assurance, it is critical to have suitable characterization methods to provide traceability.
In this work we will be focusing on surface-functionalized nanomaterials, including gold nanoparticles, silver
nanoparticles, graphene oxide nanosheets, and their assembly. We propose to use complementary
approaches as our forensic strategy on particle size and size distribution, number-based and mass-based
concentrations, molecular properties on the surface of nanomaterials, and the colloidal stability. Our
objectives are to develop a methodology to obtain the key material properties of these materials and to
provide scientific insights regarding the correlation of material properties and performance to the emerging
biomedical applications.
